Two of the best 1988 audience recordings finally get the treatment
they deserve. These recordings are so good that they put to shame some of the
2004 Musicology shows. The 13th October concert has some nice moments including
a very extended version of 'Blues In C', and has the added bonus of a piano
medley which includes a performance of 'It's No Secret (What God Can Do)'. The
remainder of the show is a pretty typical (although still fantastic) US Lovesexy
show. The 14th October concert is worth the price of this 4cd set alone. It has
passion, energy and is perhaps THE best of any US Lovesexy show circulating (my
site, my opinion). Things are pretty straightforward up until 'Controversy', and
the show just goes to a whole other level. Prince stops and starts the intro to
the song over and over again while repeating the "Controversy" line, before the
band finally launch into the song. There's no piano medley on this show, however
the 13 minute 'Take This Beat' portion of 'I Wish U Heaven', which includes a
one-off rap by Cat more than makes up for it. Thankfully 'Alphabet Street' is
performed, and is a fantastic, fitting way to end these two phenomenal shows.
These recordings have been circulating amongst collectors for a while now,
however Sabotage have done an excellent job in boosting the (already excellent)
sound quality. The added 'Musical Portrait' is nice to have in stereo, however
as with all documentaries there is a little too much talking and it is best
suited to video not audio. The packaging is superb with some rarely seen
photo's, and 2 nice reviews of the shows from the Atlanta Journal. Undoubtedly
my personal favourite recent Sabotage release. Love it? I freaking do!
