3.0/5.0)
Concentrating on the 2000/2001
era, this is (for the most part) a rather respectable attempt at documenting
some of the better footage currently circulating from the period. The
opening 15 minutes consists of the audience filmed video recording of the
soundcheck in preparation for the nights 'A Celebration' show. Filmed from
the right of the stage, the view is mostly unobstructed and clear. The
picture quality is slightly grainy, however to the best of my knowledge this
is the first time it has appeared on a DVD of this nature (I'm aware of it
existing on both VHS and VCD previous to this). The audio appears to have
been replaced by the recording from Premium's 'A Celebration' release, which
is a solid, impressive recording and the excellent recording matched with
the very decent video recording makes an enjoyable, unusual 15 minute
viewing. The content of the soundcheck isn't the most taxing with much
emphasis on sound levels and microphone checks, however there is a nice
run-through of 'When You Were Mine' towards the end. The extra's on the
release are all sourced from video downloads made available via the NPG
Music Club, and it's here where the quality suffers slightly. The opening
Hit N Run Tour Intro is of excellent quality, as is the video of 'Gett Off',
however the following 'I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man' suffers
from being far too dark, there are a few minor skips/jumps during the video,
and overall the picture quality of this particular clip is the least
impressive of the entire release - no big deal as it's an insipid, bland
performance, but still. Prince's appearance during Maceo's set at the 2001
Paisley Park Celebration on 'We Gon' Make It Funky' is gritty, grainy and
hasn't transferred well to the big screen. The menu's are plain, simple and
easy to navigate and are in keeping with the period of Prince's career - one
The Rainbow Children background, the other an NPG Music Club background.
There are numerous video recordings which were made available via the NPG
music Club covering this time period which do not appear on here, so anyone
looking for a complete collection should look elsewhere, however this is
still a decent little oddity of a release, and an enjoyable, if very
incomplete, waste of 35 minutes of anyone's time.
